St. Pius Before & After

For those that’ve been following us on Facebook or Instagram over the past year, you’ve likely seen a few photos and videos from our project at St. Pius X High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Before we dive into some of the progress pictures along the way, let’s first do an overview of what all this project entailed. Known as the Warrior Pride campaign, the project can essentially be divided up into two main phases:

(1) The construction of the state-of-the-art turf football field with renovated lighting, bleachers and a parking lot.

(2) There is a building just beyond one of the end zones. This structure houses a number of different areas including bathrooms, concession stands, locker rooms and an outdoor viewing deck.

We would like to thank our friends at St. Pius X High School for allowing us to help out on such a cool construction project! It’s certainly been an awesome transformation and we’re excited to provide you with a behind-the-scenes look at it on this week’s blog post. With that all said, let’s rewind the clock back to 2019 and look at what all went into creating St. Pius’ brand new football field!

Setting the Foundation

As we look back at the summer of 2019, you’ll see the entire space didn’t look like much more than a large dirt field! Craig was on-site overseeing the underground work to ensure all of that was completed before progress continued on.

In addition to being an empty lot, you’ll see there was plenty of gravel on-site for backfilling some of the rough-in. Before we move on, check out the bleachers above that had been demoed as well! That will certainly make for quite the transformation later on!

Turf Completed and End Zone Structure Under Construction

With all of the foundational work complete, now it’s time for the fun stuff! How cool is that fresh, new turf? It certainly makes a large difference in itself!

As I briefly mentioned in the introduction, there is a structure just beyond one of the end zones that’s home to a few different components. With the walls currently in the progress of going up in the pictures below, Craig is busy getting everything lined out for ground rough-in. Any time you have a project of this size, it’s critical to be spot-on with all of your measurements. Little room for error!

Before we carry on to some more of the individual plumbing work, the bleachers are all renovated at this phase as well! Definitely a major improvement over their predecessors.

Ground Rough-In Underway

With everything all mapped out, the next step was to follow the blueprints and pipe everything that will be under the concrete. These pipes will lay the foundation for everything from the bathrooms to concession stands and plenty else. As you’ll also see at this stage, the parking lot was completed as well!

Moving Vertical

While the cinder block walls continued to get built, our construction team was busy moving vertical with the rough-in. Concrete had already been poured, so once this rough-in is complete, the project will really start to take shape!

I said it earlier in this blog, but it can’t be understated how important the rough-in phases are to any commercial plumbing project! Particularly on a job with many different elements included, it’s important to avoid any mistakes!

Groundwork for Second Floor Starting Up

Fast forward a few weeks and the space looks completely different! With the walls built all throughout the first floor, it’s time to start looking at what the second floor will look like.

Progress, Progress, Progress

The roof is up, doors are installed and this place is looking like it’s ready for some football! While our construction plumbing team completed a few things internally on the first floor, we’ll be coming back soon to install fixtures.

Still a ways to go, but definitely an awesome set up for high school football right here in Kansas City!

Time to Set Fixtures!

With the majority of the painting completed in the first floor bathrooms, let’s head back there where Shawn is installing a few of the plumbing fixtures!

At this time, we knocked out the water heater installation and all of the piping that went with it, as well as the men’s and women’s restrooms. As you can see in the photos above and below this, all of the painting was completed too.

Moving Up the Second Floor Concession Stands!

While the electricians were hard at it downstairs, let’s head to the second floor where progress is ramping up! The metal railings had all been installed, in addition to pavers being laid connecting the viewing deck to the bleacher/press box area.

Our team of Bill, Ryan and Mike were working on the concession stand that would include a hand sink and commercial kitchen sink. Kudos to them on their fine craftsmanship for this room! Keep scrolling to see the finished pics!

Time for Football!

When it comes to construction plumbing projects, one of the coolest parts to it is seeing projects truly transform throughout the construction process. What appeared to be just an empty dirt field is now all of a sudden a state-of-the-art high school football complex! From the top-notch turf to the multi-faceted structure behind the end zone and so much more, this has been an awesome one to see take shape! Having said that all, let’s now take a look at how it all looks right now. While there are a few minor things that still need done, there’s no doubt that it’s ready for football!

There are a number of rooms throughout the first floor, including a referee’s room, locker rooms and a few bathrooms.

In the photo above, you’ll see the second floor concession stands that we featured earlier. At the time this photo was taken, there was now PVC added around the copper piping to serve as insulation.

The photos below highlight the second floor viewing deck. Facing the field are garage-style doors that can be raised as well to make for the perfect spot to watch the game from the end zone!

We hope you enjoyed following along on the construction project at St. Pius X High School as much as we did! It’s certainly a huge improvement for high school athletics at Pius and we’re sure it’ll be enjoyed by plenty of high school students for years to come.
